Boy, 17, rescued from river at Blackweir Bridge in Cardiff as police speak to other young people about dangers of swimming there

A teenage boy has been taken to hospital after being rescued from the River Taff in Cardiff.

Emergency services were called to the incident near Blackweir Bridge at around 2.30pm on Wednesday, August 12.

South Wales Police confirmed that a 17-year-old boy was rescued from the river and taken to University Hospital Wales in Cardiff.

His condition was described at "conscious and breathing" as he left the scene by ambulance.

The fire service was also in attendance.

Police say they have spoken to witnesses about the incident and that enquiries are ongoing.

A number of young people who were also in the river this afternoon were spoken to by officers about the dangers of swimming at Blackweir including underrcurrents.

A spokeswoman for the force sad: "At 2.39pm today, South Wales Police received information of a 17-year-old boy being rescued from the River Taff near Blackweir Bridge, Cardiff.

"He was described as conscious and breathing when leaving in the ambulance for the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

"Witnesses have been spoken to and enquiries are ongoing.

"A number of young people who were in the river this afternoon received advice from officers regarding the dangers of swimming at Blackweir.

"Please could we remind parents to speak to their children about how dangerous this is due to the water temperature, underwater hazards and undercurrents."
