Detectives said the driver made off from the scene of the crash without stopping.

Officers also confirmed that shortly after the crash, at around 7.15pm, a red Ford Focus was found on fire at the junction of Boundary Road and Worcester Road.

Enquires are ongoing to determine whether this was the vehicle involved.

Detective Inspector Barbara Hebden is now appealing for information after the 'appalling' incident.

She said: "At this stage, we are looking to confirm the exact circumstances, but to be involved in such a collision and fail to stop is appalling and we’re keen to identify the driver at the earliest opportunity.

"If you saw the collision or a car matching this description driving at speed in the area, pass on your information, CCTV, dashcam or any other images, which could prove invaluable to finding those responsible."
