Boy, 17, dies after car crashes into taxi in police chase

A teenager has died following a police pursuit which ended in an horrific crash.

The 17-year-old boy, a passenger, was critically injured when a Ford Focus crashed into a taxi in Chorlton at 3.45am on March 31.

Police say the car had run a red light and was being pursued when the crash happened on Mauldeth Road West, close to the junction with Yew Tree Road.

Firefighters had to use cutting gear to free three people from the wreckage.

Two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Today (Friday) a statement from Greater Manchester Police confirmed the 17-year-old died of his injuries on Tuesday.

GMP has referred to case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has launched its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal pursuit.

The GMP statement said: "Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the passenger - a 17 year male - sadly died on Tuesday 6 April. The second teenage boy remains in a critical but non-life threatening condition in hospital."

A 19-year-old man was arrested for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop for the police and failing to stop after a road accident.

He has been released under investigation, according to GMP.

An eyewitness told the M.E.N they saw police chasing someone down an alley shortly after the crash, which happened at around 3.45am.

An officer also got glass in his eye during the subsequent rescue with emergency services, police added.

GMP's Chief Superintendent Wasim Chaudhry said: "Our thoughts remain with the family of the boy who has sadly lost his life, and all those affected by this incident.

"We are fully cooperating with the independent investigation by the IOPC, and it will therefore not be appropriate to comment any further at this time."
