A 17-year-old boy was critically injured by a wrong-way driver Monday in a hit-and-run in Albany Park on the North Side.

The boy was walking about 6:30 p.m. in the 4800 block of North Monticello Avenue when he was struck by a southbound dark-colored SUV, Chicago police said. The SUV was traveling the wrong way down Monticello Avenue, which is a one-way street.

The boy was dragged a short distance before the driver fled the scene eastbound on Lawrence Avenue.

He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition with head, back and shoulder injuries, police said.

The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit is investigating the crash.
