Boy, 17, arrested over Cork hit-and-run released from garda custody

A teenage boy who was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run which left a young boy in a critical condition has been released.

Zac, two, was rushed to hospital after he was hit by a car near his home in Cork on Monday.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the incident which happened at Castle Meadows on Skehard Road.

But gardai confirmed the teen was released without charge from garda custody on Wednesday morning.

A spokesman said: "A male teenager arrested in connection with a serious hit and run in Cork was released from Garda custody this morning.

"A file will now be prepared for the information of the Director of Public Prosecutions."

Zac's dad hit out at the occupants of the car who drove off after the collision at 4pm on Monday.

Paul Higgins said he hoped the motorist and those inside the car "rot in hell".

Little Zac was transferred on Monday from Cork University Hospital to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin. He was placed in an induced coma.

Paul took to social media on Tuesday to thank the emergency services for their help.

He said: "I would like to thank everyone who sent well wishes today.

"After the longest four hours in the CUH our little warrior hit the road to Dublin by ambulance.

"He will love that when he wakes to hear it. He arrived at Temple Street Hospital straight for CT scan which showed good results so far.

"To see your child that way is the worst feeling I ever had in my life today. Special thanks to all our friends in Castlemeadows who went above and beyond."
