Boy, 16, shot by police charged

Aug. 23--A 16-year-old boy who was shot on the South Side on Friday night after he allegedly pointed a gun toward police has been charged with weapons offenses, police said.

The teen, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault against a peace officer, both felonies, police said.

The teen was released to the custody of a parent, police said.

Englewood District tactical officers were on patrol around 7:30 p.m. Friday when they saw a group of people standing in an alley near 71st Street and Marshfield Avenue in the South Side's West Englewood neighborhood, authorities said, citing preliminary information.

A 16-year-old boy who was in the group noticed the officers and ran away while holding his side, authorities said.

Officers on foot and by squad car went after the teen as he fled down the block.

Authorities said the teen then pulled a gun out of his waistband and pointed it toward at least one of the officers. One officer then opened fire on the teen, striking him in the right flank as many as three or four times, authorities said.

The teen was then taken into custody and to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in serious-to-critical condition.

No officers were hurt, and a gun was recovered at the scene, authorities said.
