Boy, 16, killed in car crash after police called to attempted burglary

A teenager has died after a car crashed into a wall in Greater Manchester.

Police had been called to an attempted burglary in Ambleside, Stalybridge, just after 6pm on Tuesday and followed a VW Golf car which then crashed in Wakefield Road.

The driver, aged 16, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the collision at around 6.30pm.

A passenger of the same age was taken to hospital by paramedics in a serious condition.

Enquiries are on-going and a cordon is in place whilst an investigation takes place.

Road closures are in place and will remain in place for several hours.

This includes Wakefield Road in both directions from Printworks Road to Souracre Fold.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

Firefighters from Stalybridge and Ashton-under-Lyne stations were at the scene.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) spokesperson said: "Just before 6:30 pm this evening, two fire engines and the Technical Response Unit from Stalybridge and Ashton-under-Lyne fire stations were called to a road traffic collision involving one vehicle on Wakefield Road, Stalybridge."

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 2146 of 03/11/20.

In line with normal procedure, the incident has been referred to GMP's Professional Standards Branch and the IOPC.
