A youth has been found guilty of the rape and murder of schoolgirl Viktorija Sokolova, who was found dead in a park.

The boy, 16, faces an automatic life sentence after being convicted at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday.

The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, had denied killing the 14-year-old, whose spine and skull were fractured during a "horrific" attack in the city’s West Park.

He was remanded in custody until February 22 after the judge ordered a pre-sentence report.

High Court judge Mr Justice Jeremy Baker said: "He is still young, 16 years of age.

"I am obviously concerned as to the extreme nature of the offences in this case and therefore it seems to me that the court ought to be properly informed about all of the background."

Viktorija was reported missing the day before her death by her mother, who had to deny playing a part in the murder.

The boy had used Facebook Messenger to arrange to meet Viktorija in the city's West Park on the evening she was killed.

The teen had refused a lift home before leaving a friend’s house at 10.40pm on April 11 and walking to the park.

Her killer is thought to have used a hammer-like weapon to fracture the teen’s skull in a pavilion known as the "black house", before sexually abusing her dead body.

Her body was found partially-clothed and draped over a bench by a passing dog-walker the next morning, with her white jeans and underwear found in a nearby bin.

Viktorija’s mother Karoline Valantiniene and her husband Saidas Valantinas were forced to deny playing a part in the killing after Mr Valantinas' semen was found on the underwear the girl had been wearing.

Mr Valantinas told jurors he did not know how his DNA came to be on either item of his stepdaughter's clothing.
