Boy, 15, suffers serious injuries after falling from footbridge over the A1

A teenage boy is seriously injured in hospital after falling from a footbridge over the A1 in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to the scene between near Kingston Park just after 2pm on Saturday afternoon following the incident on the northbound carriageway.

Police closed the road in both directions between Kenton Bar Roundabout and Kingston Park and Highways England issued diversion advice before the A1 could be reopened just after 3.30pm.

The 15-year-old boy was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with what police have described as "serious injuries" but thankfully, they are not thought to be life threatening.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 2.30pm on Saturday (October 26), police received a report that a teenager had fallen from the footbridge onto the A1 near Kingston Park.

"Emergency services attended and the 15-year-old male was taken by road to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries."

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got a call from a passer-by at around 2.24pm to reports that a person had fallen from a footbridge over the A1 between the junctions of Gosforth and Kingston Park.

“A specialist paramedic trauma car and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene and we have taken the patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”
