Boy, 15, set to go on trial for murder of teenager Tyrone Hayman

Trials are resuming at Bristol Crown Court after ceasing during coronavirus lockdown.

Over the last seven weeks the regional court centre has continued to run a reduced number of courts from the usual ten, handling smaller lists of cases without juries.

Hearings have used video technology to accommodate home working for some judges and barristers or members of the press to listen in.

Audio quality of video hearings has been an issue to overcome, whether it be problems with sound feedback or difficulties hearing counsel who have attended the centre in Small Street and are speaking from court.

On Monday (May 18, 2020) a trial is due to start of a 15 year-old-boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, charged with the murder of 17-year-old Tyrone Hayman in Bristol on December 14 last year.

Tyrone died in hospital following an incident at a property in the Bedminster area of the city .

The case had its first mention at the court on December 20 last year, for which the teenage defendant, from Bristol, was excused.

In a ten-minute hearing The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC pencilled in an estimated five-day trial.

The trial in Court One is to be presided over by The Honourable Mr Justice Garnham.

Adam Vaitilingam QC is prosecuting and Dominic Thomas is defending.

A jury panel will observe social distancing, sitting around the court as opposed to two tight rows of six, and video technology will be deployed for some witnesses.

Proceedings will be beamed into another court within the building to accommodate the press and public, also observing social distancing.

The court intends to run one trial at a time as the coronavirus pandemic continues.
