Boy, 15, seriously injured after being hit by car near pedestrian crossing

A schoolboy has been seriously injured after he was hit by a car on a major Merseyside road this morning.

The 15-year-old pedestrian was struck by a Vauxhall Astra on the busy St Helens Linkway, near the junction with Elton Head Road.

Ambulance and police have confirmed the boy was taken to hospital in a serious condition, as a result of the accident, which is expected to see the road remain closed into the afternoon.

Pictures from the scene show a parked up Astra close to a pedestrian crossing, meanwhile several police officers carrying out investigative work can be seen nearby.

An air ambulance was among North West Ambulance Service's response but the boy was taken to hospital by road.

Motorists have been warned to avoid the area.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "At around 8.30am, it was reported that a Vauxhall Astra had been in collision with a pedestrian on St Helens Linkway, near the junction with Elton Head Road.

"Emergency services attended and the pedestrian, a 15-year-old boy, has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

"The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene to assist with enquiries."
