Boy, 15, loses both eyes after police shoot 52 pellets into his face at protest

A teenager has been blinded in both eyes after police shot 52 rubber pellets into his face during a protest.

Rufo Chacon, 16, was injured when the authorities shot into a crowd of protesters in Andean city, Venezuela, on July 2.

His 14-year-old brother, Adrian, and another child also suffered head injuries at the demonstration, which was organised over cooking gas shortages.

Two officers have been charged with attempted murder, improper use of a weapon and cruel treatment, following the chaos.

Rufo told CNN : "I want to have my sight back. I have all sorts of feelings, I would like to cry but I can no more. I cried enough in the hospital."

Surgeons removed what remained of the youngster's eyes and had to leave some pellet fragments inside his head because they were too deep to reach.

He only spent four days in hospital as doctors were concerned that he could contract an infection if he stayed any longer.

Rufo went to the demonstration with his brother and mum to protest about the lack of cooking gas in their region.

The family has been without gas since April, Rufo said.

Fortunately, Rufo has received offers of help from around the world after a picture of his injuries went viral online.

Benefactors in Mexico, Spain and the US have vowed to pay for his medical treatment and a clinic in Colombia has even offered to replace his eyelids for free.

Puerto Rican singer Don Omar also shared an image of Rufo's wounds to raise awareness about his plight.
