The pupil was attacked by a group of other boys on The Avenue outside Halewood Academy at around 3pm yesterday.
The 15-year-old Halewood Academy pupil was injured and taken home by one of his parent.
Police said no weapons were involved.
A spokesperson for Halewood Academy said one pupil was attacked by a group of youths who do not attend the school.
They confirmed the incident happened nearby and not on school premises.
They added that the school is supporting the injured pupil and the investigation is now a police matter.
Police said they were investigating an 'assault' which happened outside the school yesterday. A spokesman for the force said to the ECHO: "Merseyside Police is appealing for information following a report of an assault outside a school in Halewood on Monday, 21 October.
"A report was received just before 3pm that a group of pupils were fighting outside Halewood Academy on The Avenue. A 15-year-old male was injured and was taken home by one of his parents.
"No weapons were involved in the incident.
"CCTV opportunities are being explored and enquiries into the incident are ongoing."
