Boy, 14, 'caught behind wheel of Land Rover with drunk parents in the back'

A 14-year-old boy was allegedly caught behind the wheel of a Land Rover which failed to stop for police officers - with his 'drunk parents' in the back.

Two people have now been charged with child cruelty offences following the incident in Co Tyrone last weekend.

It is alleged the teenager was driving the Land Rover Discovery with his intoxicated parents in the back when police questioned the manner of driving and tried to pull it over.

After failing to stop for officers, the driver tried to flee but soon mounted a kerb and stopped, Belfast Live reports.

A 59-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were charged with a number of offences and appeared at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday in relation to the incident on Sunday January 29.

The 14-year-old was arrested but later released on police bail.

Posting about the incident on Police Mid Ulster Facebook page, the PSNI said: "Last weekend was a busy one for officers across Mid Ulster. Whilst travelling to another incident a Dungannon crew has come across this Land Rover Discovery.

"After questioning the manner of driving they have tried to pull it over. On activating the blue lights the driver has failed to stop and tried to make off. The vehicle has entered the Newell Road before mounting a kerb and stopping.

"On speaking with the driver, officers have discovered a 14 year old behind the wheel. To make matters worse, the child was accompanied by two passengers - his drunk parents."

The case was adjourned to a sitting of Dungannon Magistrates Court later this month and the couple were remanded into custody following their appearance in court on Monday.
