Boy, 13, returns home after weeks in hospital with Covid over Christmas

Christmas was delayed until this week for 13-year-old Seth Burke and his brothers after he ended up seriously ill in hospital with coronavirus.

The teenager, from Dinas Powys, caught the virus just days after becoming a member of the Welsh Youth Parliament.

Seth has progressive muscle-weakening condition Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) which leads to difficulties with movement, making him more susceptible to coronavirus, and over Christmas he was fighting for his life in intensive care.

Now, he has made a remarkable recovery and was well enough to get home on Wednesday for the delayed celebrations with brothers Reggie, 10, and five-year-old Eli.

After testing positive for Covid on December 13, Seth's health went downhill a few days later. His temperature rose, he felt very unwell and he was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

When his condition deteriorated further, he was admitted to intensive care and on Christmas Day he was put on non-invasive ventilation to help him breathe.

Seth says: "Covid is horrible. I was taken onto intensive care when I had it because I had it really bad. My message is, if you think you have Covid, get tested.

"It was three in the morning and mum was at home with my baby brother. My dad was in hospital with me, and my lung collapsed and they had to give me some sort of anaesthetic to do an emergency chest drain and it was not very nice.

"Children can get Covid. I just want people not to get as ill as I was. I just want people to stay well."

His mum Lisa says: "It's been awful. All three of my boys caught coronavirus. Seth was the most affected, but Reggie was quite poorly too.

"It's the second time we've all had it, and we go nowhere! It has been a nightmare.

"Seth has been in hospital since December 16, so we are only just doing Christmas today."
