A 13-year-old boy hid his bloodied siblings in bushes and walked for six hours to seek help after his mother was shot by gunmen, it emerged today.

Devin Blake Langford covered his six brothers and sisters with branches to “keep them safe while he sought help”, his relative Kendra Lee Miller wrote on Facebook.

His mother, Dawna Ray Langford, 43, was driving in one of three SUVs that were ambushed by a drug cartel in an attack that left three women and six children dead in the state of Sonora on Monday.

The victims were all members of a US Mormon family.

After seeing his mother and two younger brothers — Trevor, 11, and Rogan, two — die, Devin walked about 14 miles to his family’s community of La Mora and raised the alarm with his uncles.

Five of the children hidden by Devin were taken to a local hospital and later flown to Arizona.

The sixth child, Devin’s nine-year-old sister McKenzie, went missing after she left in a second attempt to get help.

She was found by relatives and soldiers after a two-hour search of the area, Ms Miller said.

As grieving relatives visited the scene of the attack, one said the hospitalised children were in a stable condition.
