Boy, 13, dies following hit-and-run in Wigan - he was on his way to play football with his mates

A 13-year-old boy has died following a hit-and-run in Wigan.

Jack Worwood - who has been named by police - was on his way to play football with his friends when he was hit on Tuesday afternoon.

The teenager bravely clung on to life in hospital, before sadly passing away earlier today (Wednesday).

Police said the boy was hit by a Jaguar car as he walked along the pavement on Old Road in Ashton in Makerfield at around 4.30pm.

The car then hit a wall. The driver and passenger didn't stop following the incident.

The teenager was rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition. Old Road was closed for six hours while investigations were carried out.

Tragically, he passed away - surrounded by his family this afternoon.

In a heartbreaking Facebook post, one of the boy's family members said he was walking to play football with his friends when he was hit by the car.

A 15-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while uninsured, causing death while unlicensed, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

They both remain in custody for questioning.

Sergeant Darren Hancock of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is devastating news and our thoughts are wholeheartedly with Jack’s family as they struggle to come to terms with what has happened.

“We are determined to find them the answers they deserve and I want to again appeal to the public to come forward with any information or dash-cam footage that may assist us.”

Anyone with information is asked to call GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 1965 of July 8; or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
