A boy of 13 has been detained in the US after telling Siri 'I'm going to shoot up a school,' police said.

The boy was held by officers from Valparaiso police department after reportedly making the request to the Apple virtual assistant before posting a screenshot of the interaction online "as a joke."

Police said yesterday he had been detained at a juvenile detention centre on a charge of intimidation.

They said they did not believe the boy's actions amounted to a 'credible threat.'

Police said the boy made no direct threat " to a specific person, school, or school system."

"It has since been discovered the male has no access to weapons," police added.

"These types of communications are taken very seriously by the Valparaiso Police Department and our community.

"We continue to work with the Valparaiso Community Schools to ensure the safety of the students and staff," police said in their statement.
