Boy 12, killed on train tracks was 'funniest person going' says devastated best friend

More heartbreaking tributes have been left near the spot where a 12-year-old died after he was electrocuted on a railway line.

James Myers was sadly fatally injured after he clambered onto the live lines, close to a bridge on Bedford Road, Bootle, at around 7pm on Monday evening.

The much-loved Everton fan, who was together with another 12-year-old boy, tragically died at the scene.

Over the last 40 hours, a large shrine of flowers has built up on railings on Kings Road, with many friends leaving messages of condolence.

One pal, on a large A-4 sheet of white paper, wrote: "To James, (best mate)

"I can't believe you have gone.

"You were the funniest person going and you were a true brudda[brother].

"You were loved by most people, my heart goes out to your family.

"Save us a seat up there, son.

"You will always be remembered by everyone.

"I'm sorry for all the times we had beef[arguments].

"Gone but never forgotten."

Several "Justice for James" messages were also written on other tributes, an apparent reference to fears that the section of railway line was too easily accessible to children.

The 12-year-old was described as a "brother, mate, cousin, son, friend and grandson" in tributes left at the scene.

Other comments said: "Fly high" with a picture of a broken red heart, and another read "Gain your wings."

James managed to get on the Northern Line tracks which were isolated as soon as rail bosses were informed that a young boy had been seen on the railway line.

Locals suggested the youths had returned to a spot where they had lost an item last weekend, and were trying to retrieve it, but that is unconfirmed.

James was a pupil at Newfield School in Thornton where he was said to be "performing well" with his studies and was excelling in subjects including maths and English.

Retired window cleaner Jimmy Ellison told the ECHO how he had come across James' friend, who jumped down from the rail bridge while begging the 65-year-old to call 999.

He urged the married dad-of-four: "Help me, help me, mister!

"Don't leave me!"

One of the first tributes to be left at the scene, on Tuesday morning, came from James' 14-year-old girlfriend who quoted words of the Rhianna song Diamonds, attached to a bouquet of flowers.

She said: "Shine bright like a diamond.

"You were the happiest little boy.

"You will be missed.

"By your girl."

Earlier today, the ECHO reported how three separate investigations are now ongoing .

The British Transport Police will probe anything criminal, although there is nothing to suspect the incident is suspicious, while the Office for Rail and Road are studying what happened for any potential breaches of health and safety laws.

The third enquiry is by Network Rail who run the lines.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Lewis, of British Transport Police[BTP], said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident which I know will have shocked many in the local community.

“While we have no reason to be believe there were any suspicious circumstances to this incident, we are still working to establish the full circumstances behind the boy’s death.

"I would like to appeal to anyone in the area who may have seen two young boys close to the tracks around this time to get in touch with us."

A file is being prepared for the coroner.

If you can help, text 61016 or call BTP 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 488 of 14/10/19.
