Boy, 12, hit by car 'critically ill' after being flown to hospital in air ambulance

A 12-year-old boy has been left in a critical condition after being hit by a car in Manchester today.

The incident occurred in Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton, just after 3.45pm, with the child rushed to hospital with a serious head injury, Greater Manchester Police have said.

The car involved failed to stop at the scene, a force spokesperson told the Mirror.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing, they added.

An air ambulance was dispatched, with the road closed off in both directions by police between Mauldeth Road West and High Lane, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Bus diversions remain in place with heavy delays of up to 70 minutes in the area.

A GMP statement said: "Shortly before 4pm today, police were called by the ambulance service to reports of a collision between a car and a 12-year-old boy on Barlow Moor Road, Manchester.

"The car failed to stop at the scene.

"Emergency services attended and the boy was taken to hospital with a serious head injury where he remains in a critical condition.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."

Photos from the scene show a cordon with police vehicles nearby, as well as an air ambulance flying overhead.

Local media describes a heavy police presence in the area.

A Northwest Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "An ambulance has taken a 12-year-old boy to hospital in a critically ill condition.

"It follows an RTC involving a car and pedestrian on Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton-Cum-Hardy.

"We received a 999 call at 15.48.

"An air ambulance, advanced paramedic, and three rapid response vehicle also responded to the incident."

In a tweet, Transport for Greater Manchester said: "Barlow Moor Rd - Chorlton is CLOSED in both directions between Mauldeth Rd W and High Ln.

"This is due to a Police Incident.

"Please follow @Stagecoach for diversion information. #TfGMTraffic."
