Boy, 12, fighting for life in hospital after hit-and-run crash on south Manchester road

Police have launched an investigation after a 12-year-old boy was left fighting for his life following a hit and run in south Manchester.

Officers were called at around 3.50pm on Tuesday (18 May) after the school boy was struck by a car whilst he crossed Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and is understood to have turned left on to High Lane, police said.

The boy was taken to hospital with serious head injuries, where he remains in a critical condition.

No arrests have been made.

GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing to any witnesses or drivers with dash cam footage to get in touch.

They are also appealing for the driver of the vehicle to make contact with police.

The incident prompted a huge emergency response, with multiple ambulances and air ambulance attending the scene.

Barlow Moor Road remained closed off between Mauldeth Road West and High Lane for most of Tuesday evening, with a large police presence at the scene.

Police Sergeant Darren Hancock, of SCIU, said: "A boy is in hospital with very serious injuries and we need to find out exactly how this collision occurred, and who was involved.

"Our enquiries are being made at great pace and we are working to identify the driver of the car that failed to stop, however we do advise the person behind the wheel of that car to make contact with police so we can properly ascertain the circumstances of this serious incident."
