A 12-year-old boy accused of murdering a woman hit by a car appeared in court.

Marcia Grant was killed in a collision in the Greenhill area of Sheffield on Wednesday evening, South Yorkshire Police said. The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has since been charged with murder and possession of a bladed article and appeared at the city's youth court today, where he was remanded into secure accommodation.

He stood in the glass-fronted dock flanked by two security officers during the 30-minute hearing, speaking to confirm his identity, The Mirror reports.

The youngster, who was wearing a dark blue jumper over an open-necked light blue shirt and blue trousers, was ordered to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on April 11. Marcia was named after she died in the collision which happened at 7.10pm on Wednesday.

The 60-year-old was described by loved ones as "a warm, loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend" as well as "a pillar of her community".

One friend said: "Marcia was a wonderful person. I was lucky to have known her and my heart is breaking for her family."

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Emergency services were called at 7.10pm on Wednesday 5 April to reports of a collision between a car and a woman in the Greenhill area.

"A 60-year-old woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."

Flowers and tributes were left outside a semi-detached house near to the scene in Greenhill on Thursday following the news, with the property remaining sealed off by police until Friday.
