Boy, 11, who died suddenly in his sleep to be given 'funeral he deserves'

Donations to the family of an "Everton-mad" schoolboy who suddenly died in his sleep have poured in over the weekend.

Alfie Humphreys, 11, from Widnes, was found dead on Friday morning by his heartbroken mum, Nicola Whitfield.

Since the news of his death hundreds of donations have flooded in from people who want to help the family pay for the funeral 'he deserves'.

And now, over £20,000 has been raised to give the young boy 'with a heart of gold' the send off he deserves.

The GoFundMe page was organised by Linzi Davies on behalf of Widnes FC with the intentions of helping cover funeral costs for the young boy and support for the family going forward.

Mum, Nicola, and step-mum Lisa Barton said Alfie was a passionate football fan and it is hoped Everton-themed tributes can be paid to him at his funeral.

On the fundraising page, Linzi said: "The whole of the close-knit Widnes FC family is shocked and saddened the news.

"With the family’s blessing we are asking for any donations to help cover funeral costs or anything that can help support the family going forward.

"In true Widnes FC spirit, we know we will all come together as one, like we have always done, to show our love and support for an amazing young footballer and his family.

"Our thoughts and love go out to everyone close to Alfie at this incredibly sad time."

At the time of writing, the page has raised £20,438 with 498 recent donations.

On the page hundreds of people have left messages of condolence alongside their donations.

One wrote: "Sorry for your loss. Alfie sounds like he was a legend for Widnes FC."

The team at Moore United FC donated £250 and wrote: "Sending our deepest condolences to Alfie’s family, friends and team mates at this sad time. Love all at Moore United FC x."

And a mum saddened by the news wrote: "I am so sorry for the loss of this poor young lads life. Myself a mum of three boys, two of which have or still play football.

"This lad deserves the best send off. My heart goes out to his family, friends and team mates."
