A child who was savaged by a dog 'thought he was going to die' in the mauling at the start of his summer holidays.
Cooper Johnstone was calling for a friend last Wednesday when his family say he was attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
The flesh of his arm can be seen ripped from the bone in gruesome pictures taken by the 11-year-old's parents at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.
Dad Ellis Johnstone told the Liverpool Echo : "He was planning his little afternoon with his friend and filling up the paddling pool. He went to his friend's house to knock on and ask him to come around.
"That was around 1pm and I got a phone call at about 10 past from my daughter saying Cooper had been bitten by a dog."
The 46-year-old dad, who lives in Ormskirk, said: "I ran straight around and went in [to my daughter's house]. One of the neighbours had got a towel and put it around his arm.
"He was sitting there just screaming with pools of blood everywhere. He was just screaming."
Ellis, who runs a party tent hire company, said his son has been left "terrified and having flashbacks" by the attack, adding: "He thought he was going to die."
Cooper was released from Alder Hey on Sunday, but will have to return on Tuesday to find out from doctors what is the next step for his wounded arm.
The attack left him with puncture wounds to his chest as well as injuries to his hands, as well as the shocking wound on his arm.
After his terrifying ordeal, the family decided to share photos of the severity of Cooper's injuries to raise awareness for other parents.
Ellis said: "I want to raise awareness of what can happen, whether it's a family pet or a kid with a dog. It's about raising awareness of what dogs can do. He could have been dead."
The incident was reported to Lancashire Police and that officers responded to their concerns about the dog.
