North West Ambulances were also on the scene following the incident, on Shaw Road, Royton.

Several road closures were in place and members of the public were advised to avoid the area.

It has since been confirmed by North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) that an 11-year-old boy suffered ‘major-trauma related injuries’, and was taken to hospital by paramedics.

The service also confirmed the boy was ‘hit by a car’ in the incident.

A statement from NWAS added that the child was taken to hospital by road.

The incident required Shaw Road to be closed over the afternoon, but as of Monday evening, it was reopened to traffic by the authorities.

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: "We have taken an 11-year-old boy to hospital, with major-trauma related injuries.

"He was hit by a car.

"Air ambulance was also on the scene although he went to hospital by road."
