Boy, 11, airlifted to hospital after being hit by car in 'critical' condition

An 11-year-old boy is in a critical condition after he was hit by a Mercedes in Birkenhead.

The emergency services were called out to Borough Road in Birkenhead at around 3.20pm yesterday afternoon following reports of a crash.

The boy was airlifted to hospital with a head injury and remains in a critical condition, police said.

The driver, a man in his 50s, stopped at the scene and helped police with their enquiries.

The accident happened opposite Birkenhead Central Library.

Police were seen examining a Mercedes at the scene after the crash.

A witness said: "The air ambulance landed on the car park. It was a child got knocked off a bike by a car."

Another said: "A young boy been knocked off his pedal bike seems to be in a bad way. The helicopter landed right outside my home."

Multiple witnesses also described a bicycle ridden by a child being hit by a car.
