Boy, 10, fighting for life in hospital after being hit by tram while cycling

A young boy is fighting for his life in hospital after after he was hit by a tram on a busy road.

The 10-year-old was riding his bike in Audenshaw, Greater Manchester, when the collision happened, prompting a major emergency service response.

He was taken to hospital by air ambulance, Greater Manchester Police confirmed in a statement issued this morning.

The child - not yet named - suffered a serious head injury and is in a life-threatening condition.

Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made.

Droylsden Road was closed between Williamson Street and Lumb Lane after the incident last night.

Pictures from the scene showed a police cordon with a tram stationed inside.

Greater Manchester Fire Service sent three fire engines, along with the technical rescue unit, to the scene.

There they assisted paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service.

Officers are now urging anyone who witnessed the crash, which happened on a "relatively busy road", to come forward.

Police Sergeant Andrew Page of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Our thoughts are currently with the young boy who remains in hospital receiving urgent medical attention.

"Our main priority at this stage is establishing the full circumstances surrounding this collision so we can provide his family with the answers they need.

"This collision occurred early evening on a relatively busy road so we're confident there are people who may have witnessed the collision or be holding information or footage that could greatly assist our enquiries.

"We would urge anyone who thinks they be able to assist to get in touch as a matter of urgency."
