Boy, 1, dies after being strangled by football goal net during nursery game

A tragic playtime incident led to the death of a young child when he got his head stuck in a goal net.

Toddler Enrico Braga Souza, 1, was found motionless in a nursery playground in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on August 31.

A teacher discovered the stricken child stuck in the net and he was immediately taken to a nearby healthcare unit, before he was moved to an ambulatory medical care facility.

It was here that medical officials were sadly unable to save him.

CEI Meninos nursery will remain closed until September 5 as police look into what happened.

LittleEnrico was just 19 months old when he died and police said an investigation was taking place that could "possibly lead to a manslaughter charge."

The shocking incident occurred when the toddler was taking part in a game of football at playtime.

Police spokesman Douglas Dias Torres said: "I believe he put his neck through a gap in the net and he may have lost his balance and was unable to touch the ground with his hands."

Security camera footage is currently being studied, while authorities are awaiting a report to confirm if the cause of death was asphyxiation.

The spokesman added: "And, due to the weight of his own body, that may have caused this accident. He remained there and later fainted."

Five teachers and 18 children were present at the time of the incident and a team of psychologists and mediators were called to provide comfort for employees and children at the nursery.

Sao Paolo's Municipal Department of Education (SME) confirmed the investigation into the incident and revealed they were dismayed by what occurred.

In a statement, the City Hall said: "The child was attended by an emergency team, which carried out all the necessary procedures to try to revive him from a cardiorespiratory arrest, unfortunately without success.

"The service began at UBS Jardim Seckler, where first aid was performed, with an attempt to resuscitation of the patient, and immediate transfer to AMA Sacoma."

In the UK, football experts advise games involving children use smaller goal net mesh to avoid incidents like the one in Brazil.

It's A Goal said: "All children’s goalposts should have a smaller net mesh (100 mm sq) to avoid head entrapment. Use goal posts with these basic safety features and it will reduce the risks at your school or junior football club."

The Soccer Store also advises that anyone inspecting a goalpost before the game should look for telltale signs of a dangerous goal. These include bent posts and broken cords and nets.
