Boy, 1, died after being trapped in car with grandfather who had fatal diabetic attack

A one-year-old boy died after he was left freezing and trapped in a car for 16 hours when his grandfather suffered a fatal diabetic attack.

Antonio Blanco Gil, 55, often looked after his grandson Daniel when the youngster's parents were at work.

On Wednesday, December 7, Antonio took Daniel with him as he tried to get treatment at two separate medical centres when he felt unwell.

But the grandfather, from the town of Manzanilla, in southern Spain, never made it to get help and had a diabetic incident whilst driving, which took his own life and consigned his grandson to death too.

Antonio's diabetes triggered a fatal heart attack that left Daniel trapped in the car with his dead older relative and he wasn't found until well into the next day.

Doctor’s fought for five days to try and save Daniel's life after he was located on a rural road between two nearby towns.

On the horrific day in question, because the medical centres were overcrowded, Antonio never got help and instead climbed back into his black Skoda Octavia to drive Daniel back to his parents, when the incident happened.

Antonio reportedly had tried to inject himself with insulin using a syringe found next to his body, but had apparently been unable to do so before his diabetes triggered a fatal heart attack.

Local police said he drove off a rural road and crashed after becoming confused as his blood sugar level plummeted.

Although he tried to answer the phone when relatives called him, he was unable to speak or pass on details of where he was.

Daniel’s parents reported his disappearance at about 10pm that night and an alert went out to try and find them both.

An autopsy revealed that Antonio had died around 8pm on the first day as his family and security forces hunted for them through the night, in torrential rain.

But they were only discovered the following day after a forestry worker spotted the car that had been featured on the news.

The same worker had spotted the car earlier in the day, but had not given it any thought nor realised there were actually people, inside meaning Daniel spent 16 hours in the car, leading to brain damage and a coma.

Police scrambled to the scene and a medical helicopter rushed little Daniel to the nearby Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville.

Medics fought to save his life but were tragically unable to and Daniel died on Tuesday, December 13.

The tot suffered hypothermia, a lack of food and a lack of oxygen that had triggered hypoglycaemia, leading to a coma as he lay beside his dead grandfather.

Overnight the temperatures reportedly plunged to 10C when the boy was alone with his grandfather's body.

Early reports indicated that maybe it was a suicide attempt but the family said that the older man, although having depression, often said the best thing in his life was his grandson.

Antonio's godson Francisco Manuel Moreno, 33, said: "He had raised him, his grandson was what he loved the most and he would not hurt him in life."
