Boxset binging leading to sickies as TV lovers stay off work to watch favourite shows

One in five TV viewers skives off work to binge-watch their favourite show to find out what happened.

Half admit to watching more than eight hours of their favourite shows in one go and three-quarters view shows for more than four hours in a single sitting.

Four out of five said they had lost sleep so that they could continue to watch a programme.

People said they feel under pressure from friends to keep up with the latest hits, including Game of Thrones, Chernobyl and Line of Duty.

And a quarter of respondents have lied about seeing a show because everyone else was talking about it, the survey of 5500 people found.

Most viewers, 57 per cent, said they binge by watching a traditional TV,  but 33 per cent said they watch shows via laptops and 27 per cent use their smartphones.

Tim Glanfield, editorial director of RadioTimes.com, said: “The rise of US streaming giants and broadcasters’ adoption of streaming and catch-up services has fundamentally changed the way we consume TV.

“For many, the idea of waiting a week for an episode or a year for a series is the exception rather than the rule in 2019.

“Although I can’t endorse losing sleep or bunking off work, however big that cliffhanger is.”
