Boxing set for VAR revolution after replay overturned Charlie Edwards' world title defeat

Boxing could be the next sport set for a VAR revolution after video replays were used to overturn a controversial decision on Saturday night.

Flyweight world champion Charlie Edwards was seemingly stopped by Julio Cesar Martinez in the third round.

But replays showed the Mexican landed a thudding - and illegal - left hook into the champion's ribs while he lay on the canvas.

Martinez was announced as the winner but WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman immediately declared the fight a no contest and ordered a rematch.

Video replays are not currently permitted in the UK but Sulaiman had the authority to overrule referee Mark Lyson who was officiating his first world title fight.

And promoter Eddie Hearn called for more widespread use of the technology, despite the uproar it has caused since its introduction in football.

"I've never seen anything like that before, but it was completely the right thing to do," he said.

"The new conversation is that the WBC's instant replay system, which is being used quite a bit now, is not allowed by the British Boxing Board of Control.

"But when you've got 12 screens around the venue you can't ignore it, so is it time to have the system for WBC events, or do we just implement it anyway?

"Essentially it's VAR for boxing, and everyone else is doing it. There is no down side, it's not going to slow the game down which is the problem with football and cricket.

"They look at it very quickly and will rule on it very quickly."

Edwards, who could now vacate his belt and move up to super-flyweight, said: "That was the right decision, I took a knee for a purpose.

"Cheaters never prosper; we get in this ring to abide by the rules."
