The Kazakh was beaten for the first time as a professional by his bitter rival and has taken his time in returning.
He has ditched trainer Abel Sanchez in favour of Wladimir Klitschko's former coach Johnathan Banks and opted to fight the unknown Steve Rolls.
Victory for Golovkin could launch him into a third fight with Canelo later this year after the Mexican's victory over Daniel Jacobs last month.
