Boxing news: Luke Campbell ordered to fight Vasyl Lomachenko for WBC crown

The WBC has ordered Luke Campbell to face pound-for-pound star Vasyl Lomachenko for the vacant lightweight title.

Campbell had hoped to take on another contender after Mikey Garcia gave up the belt.

But the sanctioning body has agreed with Lomachenko's petition to hand him a crack at the vacant title.

The Ukrainian is considered to be one of the best fighters on the planet and defended his WBA and WBO titles against Campbell’s fellow Brit Anthony Crolla last month.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said: "I can’t say I agree with the WBC’s decision but Luke Campbell v Lomachenko is on and likely for the UK.

“Two Olympic champs and I believe Luke can do it.”

Lomachenko won two Olympic gold medals and became a three-weight world champion in the pros.

He had set his sights on winning all four world titles at lightweight to unify the division.

Campbell failed in his previous world title attempt when he lost a close points decision against Jorge Linares for the WBA belt in September 2017.

A WBC statement read: "The WBC has accepted Vasiliy Lomachenko petition to fight for the WBC lightweight title.

"A fight between mandatory challenger, Luke Campbell, from UK and multiple weight division champion, Vasiliy Lomachenko, from Ukraine, with the vacant WBC lightweight championship on the line, is officially ordered.

"Mikey Garcia, as WBC Emeritus champion, reserves his right to fight for the lightweight title.

"A tournament will be ordered to determine the mandatory challenger of the division with the following fights.”

Devin Haney, who Campbell had been expected to fight, will take part in the four-man tournament.
