According to Duran's son, Robin Duran, the decision for the pacemaker was made as his father's heartbeats were slightly irregular due to an artery obstruction. Despite concerns about a potential heart attack or mortality risk, Robin Duran reassured that his father was stable upon arrival at the hospital in Panama City, where medical examinations revealed the blockage.
Renowned for his accomplishments in the boxing world, Duran was a four-weight world champion before retiring in 2002 at the age of 50.
