Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather forced to deny he spent $1million on diamond-encrusted hat

Floyd Mayweather has leapt to deny claims he spent $1 million on a diamond-encrusted hat.

The boxing legend has remained in the public eye since retiring from professional boxing, particularly given he has been fighting in a series of lucrative exhibition fights. Mayweather has taken on some of the most high-profile influencers since retiring after beating Conor McGregor, which has included non-risk showcases against YouTubers Logan Paul and Deji.

In his most recent public appearance, Mayweather turned out to support protege Gervonta Davis in his mega-fight with rival Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas at the weekend. The former five-division world champion clambered into the ring to congratulate the rising star after he picked up a sensational KO win, but attentions turned again to the legend.

A rumour gathered pace that Mayweather was wearing a purchased hat which had been customised with diamonds making the garment worth $1 million in total. Fans baulked at the price questioning why he had spent so much money on the branded hat symbolising his notorious 'Money Team' logo.

However Mayweather has since issued a statement on social media denying the claim, writing on his Instagram story: "I don’t know who started the rumour that my hat was a million dollars. But it was $30,000. $30,000 is still a pricey number for a snap back."

Mayweather has become known for his jewellery collection having regularly sported some plush items of bling throughout his career. This is understandable given some of the lucrative purses that he has received from his fighting career including in excess of $100 million for beating UFC star McGregor.

The money certainly hasn't dried up for the 48-year-old who has already announced his next exhibition appearance against John Gatti III in Florida this summer. It is likely he will pocket another guaranteed seven-figure purse, which will likely continue as he plans further outings this year.

And the undefeated legend has even insisted that he currently generates a mammoth $300 million a month after YouTube star Jake Paul claimed he was "broke". “I will continue to give back to the sport of boxing in my time, and I will also give back financially because I got it,” Mayweather said at his first ballot induction after being named in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

“To my team, my guys in New York, and my other real estate team that’s here today, we can’t be stopped. In 32 months, I put myself in a position with a smart business team to make $300m a month. It all started from the sport of boxing.”
