Boxing legend Barry McGuigan pays emotional tribute to daughter on second anniversary of tragic death

Boxing legend Barry McGuigan has shared an emotional tribute to daughter Danika on the second anniversary of her tragic death.

The former world champ said he couldn’t believe that two years had already passed since he and his wife Sandra “lost our precious girl”.

Can’t Cope Won’t Cope actor Danika, better known as Nika, was a rising star when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2019.

She survived a life-threatening bout of acute lymphoid leukaemia when she was a child only to develop cancer in her early 30s.

The actress died on July 23, 2019, at the age of 33.

Her dad Barry shared a heartbreaking post to his social media acknowledging the day.

He said: “I can’t believe that it’s been two years since we lost our precious girl Nika RIP. The most awful day that we’ve ever experienced but I know we will meet again my baby.”

Nika posthumously won the Best Actress Film award at the 2021 IFTAs for her powerful performance in Wildfire, which was released after her death.

Her brother Blane accepted the award on her behalf, saying: “Nika’s performance speaks for herself. It is the culmination of years of hard work.

“Nika tirelessly grafted to become the best actor she could be and in Wildfire she found a vehicle that let her express herself artistically like she had never been able to do before.

“It is tragic that Nika did not get to show the world more of her endless talent, but this award and its recognition of her brilliant performance would have meant everything to Danika.”
