Boxing in danger of being cut from LA Olympics unless internal problems are resolved

Ireland's most successful Olympic sport is in danger of missing the LA Games in 2028 having failed to make the list of sports guaranteed inclusion - as skateboarding, surfing and sports climbing have been named as core sports.

AIBA chiefs, who run the sport globally, had previously been told by the International Olympic Committee that they had two years to sort out their sport ahead of Paris 2023.

Boxing is only provisionally included for the next Games.

An IOC taskforce ran the Boxing tournament at the Tokyo Olympics, where Kellie Harrington won gold and Belfast’s Aidan Walsh won bronze in the ring for Ireland.

That brought the overall total to 18 for Irish boxers in games history, a roll of honour that includes Katie Taylor (gold), Michael Caruth (gold) and Wayne McCullough (silver).

Paddy Barnes also won two bronze medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, while Michael Conlan won bronze in London in 2012 and Hugh Russell bronze in 1980.

The IOC taskforce had been brought in after allegations of corruption in the judging of the Rio tournament four years earlier.

Boxing joins Modern Pentathlon and Weight-lifting in missing out on guaranteed status for LA in seven years' time, with Boxing and Weight-lifting described by IOC President Thomas Bach as 'problem children'.

The sports have until December 2024 to convince Olympic chiefs that they deserve their place at the 2028 games.
