Boxing fans snub Floyd Mayweather vs Aaron Chalmers as thousands of seats lie empty

Boxing fans appeared to snub Floyd Mayweather's UK debut as they stayed away from his exhibition bout against Aaron Chalmers.

Mayweather and Chalmers will touch gloves at the 20,000-capacity O2 arena in London tonight with ring walks expected to take place at around 11pm. But as the fights got underway earlier in the evening, the huge stadium was almost empty.

Boxing fans often only take their seats for the main event but the corridors and walkways of the famous arena were also empty as Mayweather appeared unable to draw a crowd. The ring legend, who is now 46, is embarking on a worldwide exhibition tour which has seen him bank millions since he stopped fighting professionally.

His bout with YouTuber Deji last November drew interest due to his opponent's popularity, but Mayweather's clash with former Geordie Shore star Chalmers has failed to do likewise. Even Mayweather appeared disinterested his week when he failed to show up for yesterday's weigh-in.

Mayweather did at least show up for the press conference, during which he said: "It’s great to be back in the UK performing, dreams come true. I’ve been coming to UK since 1993 – it’s good to be over here. My advice to him [Chalmers] is to leave here with skills. He’s rough, tough and got experience in combat, so I’m pretty sure he’ll be at his best. I’ve got so much experience at the highest level. I’ve fought at the best events."

Chalmers accepted the fight at short-notice after kickboxing veteran Liam Harrison was listed as the opponent before hastily correcting the announcement when he revealed he was in fact injured. Chalmers, who has fought in both boxing and mixed martial arts, said: "I’m just excited. We’re here now, it’s been a whirlwind four weeks. I know his jab is unbelievable, can I handle that jab? You’ll find that out on Saturday.

"I’ve tried to be sharp and fit, I’ve got a nutritionist and there’s no stone unturned when facing Floyd. He’s one of the best boxers, so I can’t get too carried away and get clipped. If you face the best of all time, the rest should be much easier."
