Boxing fans left horrified as fighter's ear 'explodes' during world title bout

Fans were grossed out when a boxer's ear 'exploded' and left a camera covered in blood splatter during his world title fight.

Jade Bornea, 28, was stopped in the penultimate round of his super-flyweight title fight against Fernando Martinez in Minnesota over the weekend. The Filipino's right ear began to swell up in the fight and it continued to get worse as Martinez found more success. In the ninth round, Martinez backed up Bornea against the ropes with a huge flurry which led to the ringside camera being covered in blood.

The gruesome moment horrified many boxing fans as one user wrote: "Don't think I've ever seen that before." Another added: "Oh my god, blood on the camera what the f***". A third comment read: "Bornea’s ear exploded all over the camera" before a final user added: "Martinez busting Bornea’s earlobe is one of the most gruesome injuries I’ve seen in boxing."

Many fans were impressed by Bornea's toughness as he refused to let the injury bother him, fighting on for another two rounds despite the gruesome cut. "Still proud of you Jade, it was a great fight and bigger things are meant for you," one comment read. "True warrior, extremely proud of you." another added.

Bornea needed stitches to fix the big cut in his ear, but the boxer was in good spirits despite suffering the first loss of his professional career and missing out on a world title. Sean Gibbons of Knucklehead Boxing said whilst alongside the boxer: "I'm here with Jade Bornea, the Hurricane wants to say thanks for the opportunity.

"Unfortunately he had his ear burst in the ninth round and there was blood everywhere, but he never quit and never surrounded. He wants to thank the IBF and the champ will be back."

Martinez made the second defence of his world title with the win having won the belt last February against Jerwin Ancajas. The Argentine is now unbeaten in 16 fights and he wrote after his latest win: "Thanks to god, my team and my family. We are for great things, we are for unifying with the best. I won't stop there's so much more".
