Anthony Joshua entered Saturday night’s fight as a huge favorite to defend his three heavyweight titles against Andy Ruiz Jr., who was a late replacement, in their bout at Madison Square Garden.
Which made what happened midway through the seventh round all the more stunning, because after being knocked down for a fourth time in the fight, Joshua was handed his first defeat when the ref called off the fight.
And just like that Ruiz, who was often ridiculed over his physique in the days leading up to the fight, became the first fighter of Mexican descent to win the heavyweight title and he threw the weight class for an absolute loop by taking down Joshua.
