Boxing Day clubbers hit the streets of Wigan in epic fancy dress

A town centre was full of revellers having fun yesterday for the annual Boxing Day fancy dress event in Wigan.

The unofficial event takes place each year and this time saw young people dressing up in everything from I'm A Celebrity campmates to Ghostbusters and even a bottle of ketchup.

No one knows exactly how - or why - the tradition first began.

It seems that for as long as anyone in the town can remember, revellers have donned fancy dress and headed out to the pubs and clubs in the town centre in their thousands, and they aren't short of ideas when it comes to costumes.

Revellers went all out with their costumes this year and people had gone to great effort to make their town proud.

A group of three friends were spotted with matching red shorts and red hair ties, complete with their navy t-shirts complete with their camp mate numbers as they tried to recreate the uniform of the hit ITV show I'm a Celebrity.

Four women were also seen in matching beige Ghostbusters dresses. The short skirts were matched with back accessories as they braved the chilly December weather .

Not to be out done some of the men were also spotted in matching red outfits as they looked set for a trip to watch the darts and another man was seen in a yellow suit and green face paint, in an attempt to recreate Jim Carey's The Mask character.

In one image a man, who appears to be wearing a sparkly green outfit took a break from the fun and needed a helping hand back up from a friend.

And two girls dressed as lifeguards put their newfound skills to the test, by getting their friend some much needed help from a St John ambulance volunteer.

Speaking ahead of the event councillor Yvonne Klieve, lead member for night time economy at Wigan Council said: “Our amazing volunteers from St John’ Ambulance have done a great job since November by offering low-level medical and practical support in order to ease pressure on front line services.

"Tonight, they will be on hand again to provide help and reassurance to our night-time visitors.”
