Boxing Day 2021 update - sale predictions and closures for Amazon, Currys, John Lewis and Next

One of the best things about the Christmas period is shopping in the Boxing Day sales.

This year's Boxing Day will fall on Sunday, December 26 and - alongside Black Friday - it is usually one of the busiest times of the year for retailers, with queues starting as early as 5am.

For many years now, flocks of shoppers have descended onto the high street - and online - as major stores slash their prices for some seriously epic bargains.

Despite being an incredibly popular shopping event, last year's affair was slightly different after multiple retailers closed their doors due to the pandemic.

With the pandemic still ongoing, many retailers announced that they would be closing their doors once again to give staff some much-needed time off.

Nevertheless, some of your favourite retailers are still expected to provide some insane discounts for you to snap up this year, whether it be in-stores or online.

To give you a rundown for this year's Boxing Day, we have shared some handy information on the meaning of the name and what to expect.

Why do they call it Boxing Day?

If you're not familiar with the meaning behind the yearly sales event, then you might be surprised to hear that boxes were actually involved with it's creation.

While we all associate Boxing Day with shopping and bargains, the event was actually originated back in the 1800's during the reign of Queen Victoria.

The name comes from when Queen Victoria and the wealthier population of the UK would box up gifts for their maids, servants and housekeepers who were also giving that one day off to spend with their loved ones.

The church also played a part in the creation of one of the biggest shopping events in history, as they would hand out the money that had been collected throughout the year to those in need.

What stores will be closed on Boxing Day 2021?

  • Argos
  • Wilko
  • Pets At Home
  • Poundland
  • Morrisons
  • Aldi

What to expect in the Boxing Day 2021 sales

In the UK, Boxing Day sales have become synonymous with the Next sale (SWNS)

While quite a few stores and supermarkets may be closed this year, there are a few retailers that are intended to stay open and offer some insane deals.

Based off previous years, and what we know so far, here is a rundown on some of the retailers confirmed for this years Boxing Day sales.

Next

The Next Boxing Day sale is generally the one that shoppers eagerly anticipate every single year, with previous years seeing queues setting up camp the night before.

As this year's sale falls on a Sunday the store will be opening according to Sunday working hours, making the timing a bit different.

The brand is known for offering shoppers incredible discounts up to 70% across a range of departments, including clothing, home-ware and beauty.

TK Maxx

TK Maxx is another firm favourite for shoppers on Boxing Day and it is anticipated that they will hold another epic sale.

The brand is already well known for providing shoppers with incredible discounts on high-end and designer products, but Boxing Day provides shoppers with even lower price drops.

This year, it is anticipated that they will follow previous years and provide shoppers with discounts such as 80% off mens-wear and womens-wear.

Currys

If previous years are anything to go by, it looks like shoppers are in for a treat with Curry's in this year's sales once again.

The retailer has previously provided 40% across a range of electrical products in-store and online last year.

This year could see them offer the same discounts across TV's home appliances, gaming bundles and much, much more.

Amazon

Last year saw the online retailer provide shoppers with multiple deals throughout December and January across multiple product departments.

It's expected that they will hold the same discounts this year, with money off a range of products, including Tech, electrical, homeware and kitchen products.

John Lewis

Alongside Next and TK Maxx, the John Lewis Boxing day sale is another popular one with shoppers across the country.

Only Glasgow and Edinburgh have physical stores left, but you can still shop the sales online if you don't live in either city.

Last year seen the retailer slash prices across hundreds of items by up to 50%, including home-ware, make-up, designer handbags and home appliances.

Boots

If you find yourself in need of topping up your beauty bag or maybe you need new fragrances, then heading to the Boots Boxing Day sale will provide you with what you need for much less.

The beauty retailer is another popular store on Boxing Day and has seen shoppers queue for hours to get their hands on some insane bargains.

Previous years have seen them offer up to 50% off thousands of goodies, such as make-up, fragrances and skincare - it's expected that their 2021 sale will offer more or less the same discounts.
