Boxes of Vintage Harley Parts Get Soothingly ID'd in This Awesome Video

Unless you're one of those vintage bike experts who can identify things from insanely tiny details, you're probably in awe of those guys. As much of an admitted motorcycle history nerd as I am, I know I certainly feel that way. They're usually proud of their lifetimes of accumulated and arcane bike knowledge, and they absolutely should be.

At the same time, you'd kind of be a fool not to learn from them if and when you get the chance, especially if you're newer to a specific area than they are.

Take, for example, a couple of recent videos from the Bearded Mechanic. Motorcycling is a vast world, so just because you're pretty handy in your corner of it doesn't automatically mean you know everything. The smartest folks in our niche know this, and are happy to geek out about any expertise they might have, just to share both the joy and the knowledge.

Craig (TBM) knows about and works a lot on Japanese bikes from the 1970s forward, but century-old Harleys are a completely different thing. That's why, when he finally got his hands on one of his dream bikes—a 1919 Harley-Davidson Model J, mostly complete but in pieces with a rolling chassis—he knew exactly who he wanted to talk to. If you're a moto history enthusiast, you may have a very good idea of who that might be, too.

If your first guess was Matt Walksler from the Wheels Through Time Museum, get yourself a delicious cookie of your choice. TBM and WTT are two of the most useful YT channels in the motorcycle YouTube universe (hot take, I know), but beyond that, Walksler is a seeming encyclopedia of Harley knowledge that spans decades.

You'll definitely get a sense of that if you watch any of his videos, but for a relatively short and impressive burst of that knowledge, watch him go to town on Craig's boxes of parts in this video. There's even something so rare in this collection that he knows what it is when he sees it, but says he's never seen it in person before (I'm not going to spoil the fun by telling you what it is here; you'll have to watch and see for yourself).

It's a true delight for bike nerds everywhere, honestly. The expertise, the joy, the camaraderie, and also the fact that Walksler will apparently be rebuilding the engine for this bad boy himself. It's such a bright spot, and one that exemplifies what makes the motorcycle community so special and amazing.

Nerds helping nerds, that's a thing I am always happy to get behind. Cheers to all my fellow nerds out there.
