Boxer Scott Fitzgerald arrested on suspicion of assault after 'kick off with ex-partner'

British boxing champion Scott Fitzgerald spent a night in a cell after being arrested on suspicion of assault.

The unbeaten super-welterweight has not fought since be beat Ted Cheeseman last October and checked into Tony Adams' Sport Chance clinic to treat alcohol and gambling problems earlier this month.

In a rambling message on his Instagram account, Fitzgerald admitted he had been arrested,

He said: "Ta f *** da to the police station. Twenty four hours in a cell, that's some heavy s***."

In a further video message he added: "Yesterday I was arrested after a kick off with my ex-partner and her family."

Fitzgerald goes on to say that he broke up with his girlfriend recently.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Constabulary said: "A 28-year-old man from Preston has been arrested on suspicion of assault following an incident in the town. Enquiries are ongoing."

Fitzgerald stunned the previously unbeaten Anthony Fowler to win the British title last year before following up with victory over Cheeseman.

He had been due to return to the ring on March 7 on the undercard of Scott Quigg's defeat by Jono Carroll in Manchester.

But he pulled out several weeks before admitting he was not fit.

Fitzgerald, who plans to rematch Fowler later this year, will likely now return on a Matchroom undercard when boxing resumes following the coronavirus crisis.
