A Mexican boxer is fighting for her life at a Glasgow hospital after being placed in an induced coma following a bout in the city.

Alejandra Ayala, 31, was hospitalised after suffering a TKO loss to Scottish boxer and current WBA and IBO champion Hannah Rankin at the OVO Hydro last week.

The fighter received treatment in the ring by medical staff before being transported to hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.

Ayala is currently "in an induced coma after undergoing two surgeries for a subdural hematoma" and is "under observation and stable" according to Mexican newspaper El Diario.

Opponent Hannah Rankin took to Twitter on hearing the news to pray that Alejandra makes a "speedy recovery".

She wrote: "My thoughts, prayers and good wishes are with Alejandra and her family and team at this time. Once again thank you Scotland for supporting our fight and can we all keep Alejandra and her team in your thoughts for a speedy recovery."

It comes just a few weeks after another boxer taking part in a Glasgow bout was placed in an induced coma by doctors after receiving a 'very heavy punch'.
