Boxer Gary Rae dedicates win to stablemate Kash Farooq and eyes up title fight in 2020

Gary Rae dedicated his latest win to Renfrewshire Boxing Club stablemate Kash Farooq after sending Brett Fidoe for six.

The Barrhead bantamweight racked up his tenth win of his career at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow, winning comfortably on points over six rounds.

And ‘Razor’ Rae said he was delighted to get the win for his close pal Farooq, who suffered his first loss in controversial fashion against Lee McGregor earlier this month.

“I’m always happy with a win,” Rae told Express Sport.

“But I was really glad to get the win for Kash and the team. He was there supporting me and came in after the fight to congratulate me.

“It meant a lot having him there and it speaks volumes that he was out cheering his team on.

“He had a few stiches under his eye but he’s already back in the gym and I’m sure he’ll come back stronger despite the loss.”

In the ring, Rae had to deal with a late change of opponent after Luke Fash pulled out in the build up.

Rae had to use all his craft to ensure he dealt with the switch of scrapper quickly enough to secure another win.

He said: “There was a late change which wasn’t great. Nothing is final in boxing until you actually get in the ring.

“It didn’t throw me off though. I fought Fidoe in my second fight so I knew what he was about. He’s a very respected journeyman who doesn’t take a lot of punishment.

“I tried to march him down and work him into good positions. I managed that but I didn’t let my hands go enough. That’s the only thing I would have changed.

“It was still a very comfortable six-round performance and the win is the most important thing at the end of the day.

“I had a really good support along which was great. A big thanks to them because they kept me going and kept me performing.”

With Christmas fast approaching, Rae is targeting some time off before heading into a big fight early next year.

And, with a Celtic bantamweight clash a possiblity in March, Rae is buzzing at the prospect of a title battle.

He said: “I’m really wanting a big fight next up. It’s looking like being in March, a ten or 12-round fight at St Andrew’s Boxing Club for a title.

“I’m really looking for something I can get my teeth into in January and that would certainly be ideal.

“You know how hard it is in training when you’re preparing for a fight that size.

“It’s a ten or 12-week training camp and you’ve got to step up for that.

“That fight would put me on to bigger and better things in the summer so as long as I keep winning, it’s full steam ahead for next year.”
