Boxer Errol Spence Jr. faces DWI charge after wreck that sent Ferrari rolling down Dallas street

DALLAS _ Boxer Errol Spence Jr. faces a DWI charge in connection with a single-car wreck last week that sent a Ferrari tumbling down a street near downtown Dallas and seriously injured the welterweight champion.

Dallas police said Wednesday that Spence, 29, was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Spence was thrown from the Ferrari when he lost control of the vehicle at a high speed around 2:45 a.m. Thursday in the 500 block of South Riverfront Boulevard. The car went over the median into the oncoming lanes and flipped a number of times, according to police.

Police said they would not be releasing an official speed the Ferrari was traveling at the time of the crash because it was a single-vehicle accident.

Footage from a nearby business captured the violent crash.

Spence was not wearing a seatbelt. He was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center with serious injuries, but his family said in a statement later that day that he did not suffer any broken bones or fractures and was expected to make a full recovery.

He has since been released from the hospital, police said Wednesday.

In his most recent bout on Sept. 28, the DeSoto resident defeated Shawn Porter to improve his record to 26-0 and secure the World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation welterweight titles.
