Christy Martin, the subject of the new Sydney Sweeney-starring biopic Christy, has taken to Instagram to defend the actress following a box office flop and a fiery Ruby Rose call-out.
ICYMI, Sweeney has been copping heat for the better part of this year, but the most recent wave of backlash is aimed at her titular role as Martin in the just-released biopic Christy.
Directed by David Michôd, the movie tanked spectacularly at the box office and became one of the worst debuts for an original film in the US in history.
Matters were only made worse on Wednesday, when Aussie actress Rose slammed the film and labelled Sweeney a “cretin”.

But Sweeney has now found an ally in Martin herself, with the boxer entering the ring in staunch support of the Euphoria star.
“The past few days I have seen some people attack my friend Sydney Sweeney,” Martin wrote in an Instagram Post shared on Friday.
“I’ve always been a fighter. My life reflected that in every way and now I fight for others,” she added.
Martin went on to commend Sweeney for how she “worked her ass off” for both the film and for “so many others suffering in silence”.
“So I want to be clear about who Syd is. She is my friend and ally!” Martin said.

Though she didn’t mention her by name, it’s hard not to imagine that Rose was among the “some people” Martin addressed in her defence of Sweeney.
Earlier this week, Rose came out swinging against Sweeney in a post on Threads. Rose claimed it was her who was supposed to portray Martin, an out lesbian, in the movie, and said it was originally drafted as a queer-focussed story.
“Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time,” Rose wrote.
The Orange Is The New Black star went on to accuse Sweeney of “hat[ing]” gay people and saved the most savage jab for last, saying Sweeney is “cretin” who “ruined the film”
“Christy deserved better,” Rose concluded.

It’s far from the only storm Sweeney has weathered this year.
From a controversial jeans ad that sparked commentary from the literal White House, to a more recent non-apology for that very same controversy, Sweeney can’t quite seem to dodge negative headlines.
Good thing she now has a few boxing tricks up her glove to fend off all the criticism.
