Bowling club member speaks of devastation watching fire rip through much-loved Milngavie building

A Claremont Bowling Club member has spoken of his heartbreak as he witnessed the beloved building engulfed in flames.

The man was one of many gathered along the river bank and the streets watching firefighters battle the blaze which tore through the building.

The long-term member says the loss will leave a massive hole in the hearts of people who live nearby.

Speaking exclusively to Glasgow Live, he said: "It's a big part of the community and has a long history, it is well over 100 years old.

"It was an important gathering spot for the bingo on a Friday night. There is a care home beside it and they used to play the bingo.

"A lot of the membership were getting elderly but it still was a big part of our lives. That is it gone now."

Those who utilised the facilities believed the club was just getting back on its feet following a rough period during the pandemic.

The 15-year member added: "It will be a massive loss to all the membership.

"It wasn't just a bowling club, it had a snooker club downstairs, there was indoor bowls, we could use it all year round.

"With covid there was a wee bit of adjustment and it took a bit of a hit. But it was just coming back, it was just starting to resurrect itself again."

Emergency services rushed to the area after they received reports of the inferno at around 7am. Six fire appliances were deployed.

No one was injured during the incident, however, the cause of the fire is still unclear.
