The auctioneers are out of their element.
A Massachusetts bowling alley cited as an inspiration for the lanes in “The Big Lebowski” will be sold at a foreclosure auction in December.
Cove Bowling Lanes in Great Barrington has been for sale for years but has somehow continued operating, the Berkshire Eagle reported. It will be auctioned Dec. 15 at 11 a.m., according to Sullivan & Sullivan Auctioneers’ website.
Hankey O’Rourke Enterprises has owned the Cove since 2008 but has been going through a messy bankruptcy process for years, the Eagle reported. After several legal twists, that process will result in the foreclosure auction.
The Cove opened in 1960. The Coen Brothers attended Bard College at Simon’s Rock, just down the street from the Cove, in the 1970s, and reportedly frequented the lanes.
The Cove’s overall vibe is very similar to the unnamed alley in “Lebowski,” where Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi bowled. However, the 1998 film was actually shot at Hollywood Star Lanes in Los Angeles.
